WRDSMTH – romanticismo su muro

Intervista fatta da StickerArt a WRDSMTH.
Interview made by StickerArt with WRDSMTH.

I miei amici mi chiamano Brody.

WRDSMTH, tell us a little about yourself (Name, age, city of birth and city where you are most active artistically speaking, etc.)
I am the street artist known as WRDSMTH. My friends call me Brody. I was born in Ohio, spent time in Chicago, and began doing art while living in Los Angeles. I currently reside and split time between Los Angeles and London. I do art all over the world, but those last two cities mentioned feature an abundance of my work.

When and how did you start creating your works of art? Where does your passion come from?
I started WRDSMTHing in 2013. I am a writer and was always a fan of street art. However, it wasn’t until I came up with the idea for WRDSMTH – a painted typewriter with a wheatpasted page featuring text of mine emerging from it – that I decided to try my hand at it. I love to write in many different mediums and street art is just another medium I use to express myself – albeit a pretty kick-ass one.

When you prepare a new work, do you follow a recurring creative pattern or is it very influenced by the moment?
Pretty much both. I think of an idea or phrase, which can be influenced and inspired by the moment (present) or something from months or years ago (past) and I continue to explore the idea in my head or on paper/computer. I revise and polish the words/sentiment until I think I’ve boiled it down to the fewest yet most effective words possible. Then I deem it ready and prepare it for the streets.
Che tecnica usi? L’hai sempre usato o è cambiato nel tempo? In caso affermativo, perché?

What technique do you use? Did you always use that or did it change over time? If so, why?
My original idea combined two very popular methods of street art – painting/stencilling and wheatpasting. I love(d) the combination of these methods into what I felt was a simple idea that allowed me to feature my writing. While I still do some wheatpasting of pages, over time, I have come to love utilizing only paint for my pieces because it extends the potential longevity of the work.

What do you want to convey with your works?
I’m a positive person, so from day one I aimed to spread positive words of encouragement and motivation in these often-troubling times. I am also romantic, so a large percentage of my work explores love and relationships I’ve had, really diving into the good and bad, the highs and the heartbreak.
Cosa ne pensi della street art in Italia e all’estero?

What do you think of street art in Italy and abroad?
I love street art all over the world and take my work with me everywhere I travel. However, I have yet to explore Italy. If not for the pandemic, I would have traveled there in 2020 and I look forward to finally venturing there and doing art in the near future.

Among all your works, which is the one you like and represents you the most? and why?
I think “Aspire to inspire others and the universe will take note” has become a mantra for me and encapsulates everything about my art and why I became WRDSMTH and continue to share my work with the world any chance I get.

How long does it take you to prepare a work, from the idea to the wall?
It varies. Some pieces happen quickly from the idea forming and evolving, to finding a perfect spot/wall/location for the piece. Others take some time. There was even one instance where I carried around a piece for about three months before turning a corner in Berlin and discovering the perfect wall for it.

Come ti vedi artisticamente parlando tra dieci anni?

Ancora scrivendo, facendo arte e diffondendo positività.

How do you see yourself artistically speaking in ten years?
Still writing, doing art, and spreading positivity. Every artist wants to evolve and I am exploring some ideas, but mostly I am just having fun on a daily, weekly, monthly basis doing what I do and I want that to continue – forever.

WRDSMTH, have you collaborated with other foreign artists or would you like? Who would it be and why do you particularly admire this artist?
I love to collaborate and have been lucky to work with many inspiring artists from all over the world.

Mentors: is there an artist from whom you take inspiration? If so, who is it? How did it help you?
I am a big fan of Shepard Fairey and everything he does. He helped pave the way for so many artists that are active today and he inspires countless people with his work. He simply showed me that passion and perseverance is an invaluable combination.
