Interview made by stickerart with Neon Savage.

Neon Savage, tell us a little about yourself (Name, age, city of birth and city where you are most active artistically speaking, etc.)
My name is Neon, I’m 51 and was born in Birmingham UK. I have lived in East London most of my life and most active on the Shoreditch street art scene but I do love going back to Birmingham to create art and see it as a gift to my homeland.

When and how did you start creating your works of art? Where does your passion come from?
I went to art college, then fashion school so have always created things but I didn’t start working under the name Neon Savage until 2014. I started making little digital and analogue collages out of imagery I had collected over the years. The kitsch little animals are inspired by animal rights, some pieces have a written message but others are more subtle, people think they are cute, then notice the dripping blood. Grace Jones features a lot in my work, I’ve been a fan for a long time, she is just the most incredible woman and she was friends with 3 of my favourite artists: Andy Warhol, Keith Haring & Jean-Michel Basquiat, I really think she is incredible and has a perfect face.

When you prepare a new work do you follow a recurring creative pattern or is it very influenced by the moment? Tell us how your works are born.
In my collages I often use the same motifs again and again, the scale and position changes but little elements carry over from one to another. Often I only have a basic idea and five in, letting it develop as I work. I don’t like to plan too carefully and let my work take its own path.

What technique do you use? Did you always use that or did it change over time? If so, why?
most of my work is collage or painted, I do make collages with paper and glue but prefer digital collages as I can repeat motifs and sections of the work. Many of my characters have 3 eyes and it works well in the digital format. My method has changed over time but slowly so it may not be obvious to the viewer. The viewer doesn’t need to know how many layers are in a piece or how simple or complicated the technique was, the interaction with the finished piece is all that matters.

What do you want to convey with your works?
Originally I wanted my works on the street to make people smile, kitsch, cute characters but over time I realised I had to include the message against animal cruelty, so the tone of the work changed. I lost followers on social media who don’t like the vegan message but I found a new audience. Ultimately being true to myself is more important to me than thousands of followers on social media.
Neon Savage, cosa ne pensi della street art in Italia e all’estero?

Neon Savage, what do you think of street art in Italy and abroad?
I haven’t personally been to Italy to put my work up on the streets but friends have put work up for. I was meant to be in Italy this year to see…. Grace Jones in Turin so that would of involved a stop off in Rome for some street art – hopefully soon! I’ve seen many beautiful walls in Italy, especially Rome and in Paris, France, beautiful old walls with so much character that the art looks amazing, much better walls than London! I have street artist friends all over Europe and the world, it’s ever changing and social media has a lot to do with that – work is shared and seen by more and more people than ever before. I love it!

How long does it take you to prepare a work, from the idea to the wall?
Idea to wall… sometimes a couple of days but mostly weeks. I make the work and then think about it, lots of work never makes it to a wall just sits in a pile and eventually gets recycled.

How do you see yourself in ten years artistically speaking?
in ten years I have dreams of living in the Nevada desert in a big chrome mobile home making huge sculptures. I’m currently working on pieces than incorporate textile elements which links back to my fashion past. Fashion is such an unethical industry on the whole but is an industry of passionate and creative people, I Hope fashion finds its soul and stops harming animals and the environment very soon. So maybe my work will be more textile based/ inspired if I don’t hitch a ride to Las Vegas!

Have you collaborated with foreign artists or would you like to? Who would be and why do you particularly admire this artist?
I’m don’t collaborate much which may change after Covid as that has surely taught us how much we miss connecting with others, so yes I’ll make more effort to do collabs. I’ve done a few pieces with New Yorker CityKittyStreet who is insanely talented and makes everything look fun and brilliant. In London I’ve done some collabs with Hungarian superstar Qwert.Art who is very passionate about his creations and is great fun to work with. I’m a huge stinkfish fan and collect his work, I’m not sure how a collab would work but he would be the dream, his work is beautiful and exquisitely detailed.

Mentors: is there an artist from whom you take inspiration? If so, who is it? How did it help you?

I’ve mentioned my mentors already, the 80s are a huge influence on me and they were all superstars of the era, Grace Jones, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring & Jean-Michel Basquiat. I’ve been obsessed with them all since art college. They have always been part of my life, the music in the background the posters on the wall, it’s very difficult to pinpoint how they have helped me because the strength they have given me is unmeasurable, I think they all have such creative energy that you can’t help but be inspired.

Do you have any of your “colleagues” to recommend to me?
qwert.art who doesn’t make collages much these days but the way he assembles his paintings is a collage even if no one realises it!
Miss.printed is the collage queen! Her work is full of emotion. Boxitrixi’s pieces are so fun, I love them.
