CircusAlley – e la passione per l’horror

CircusAlley, raccontaci un po’ di te (nome, età, città di nascita e città in cui sei più attivo artisticamente parlando, ecc.)
Mi chiamo CircusAlley e vivo nella zona di Manchester, nel Regno Unito. Questo è anche il luogo in cui sono più attivo per la mia arte.
CircusAlley, tell us a little about yourself (Name, age, city of birth and city where you are most active artistically speaking, etc.)
My name is CircusAlley and I live in the Manchester area, UK. This is also where I am most active in my street art
Quando e come hai iniziato a creare le tue opere d’arte? Da dove viene la tua passione?
Ho disegnato personaggi e mostri per tutta la mia vita (mi ha messo molto nei guai a scuola) ma è stato solo intorno al 2019 che ho stampato i miei primi disegni di adesivi e ho iniziato a metterli in giro per Manchester. Sono guidato dall’orrore, davvero. Media horror, folklore, leggende metropolitane, ecc. Mi affascina davvero e ho sicuramente tratto molta della mia passione da quell’amore verso l’horror.
When and how did you start creating your works of art? Where does your passion come from?
I’ve been drawing characters and monsters my whole life (it got me in trouble a lot at school) but it wasn’t until around 2019 where I got my first few sticker designs printed and started putting them up around Manchester. I’m driven by horror, really. Horror media, folklore, urban legends, etc. It really fascinates me and I definitely pull a lot of my passion from that love.
Quando prepari un nuovo lavoro, segui uno schema creativo ricorrente o è molto influenzato dal momento?
Il più delle volte è basato sul momento. Andrò alla mia tela (cartacea o digitale) senza un’idea precisa di ciò che creerò, ma cercherò di entrare con un tema in mente. Niente di troppo coinvolto. Non saprò cosa voglio disegnare nello specifico, ma saprò che voglio disegnare qualcosa che ruota attorno, ad esempio, alle attrazioni dei parchi a tema infestati, ai clown morti o ai film “slasher” degli anni ’80.
When you prepare a new work, do you follow a recurring creative pattern or is it very influenced by the moment?
Most of the time it’s moment based. I’ll go to my canvas (paper or digital) with no solid idea on what I’ll be creating, but I’ll try to go in with a theme in mind. Nothing too involved. I won’t know what I want to draw specifically, but I’ll know I want to draw something revolving around, for example, haunted theme park attractions, dead clowns or 1980’s slasher films.
Che tecnica usi? L’hai sempre usato o è cambiato nel tempo? In caso affermativo, perché?
Tradizionalmente lavoro in digitale, utilizzando ProCreate sul mio iPad, ma il più delle volte quei lavori digitali saranno basati su uno schizzo di carta approssimativo. La maggior parte dei miei pezzi inizia su schizzi di carta ruvida perché di solito disegno sempre e trovo che la maggior parte delle mie idee vengono da me quando cerco di non essere creativo. Ad esempio durante una lunga riunione al lavoro o mentre guardo un film che conosco. Disegnare senza un vero intento mi consola.
What technique do you use? Did you always use that or did it change over time? If so, why?
I traditionally work digitally, using ProCreate on my iPad, but more often than not those digital works will be based on a roughed out paper sketch. Most of my pieces start out as rough paper sketches because I’m usually always drawing and find that most of my ideas come to me when I’m trying not to be creative. Such as during a long meeting at work or while I’m watching a film I’m familiar with. Drawing without real intent is comforting to me.
Cosa vuoi trasmettere con i tuoi lavori?
Vorrei poter dire che le mie opere avevano una forma di messaggio profondo da trasmettere. C’è un sacco di persone nella comunità della street art che sono là fuori a correggere i torti e mettere l’arte in funzione, ma sarò onesto, sono solo un piccolo goblin della street art che attacca mostri sui lampioni. Immagino che il mio messaggio sarebbe far divertire le persone <3
What do you want to convey with your works?
I wish I could say my works had any form of deep message to convey. There’s a great deal of people in the street art community who are out there righting wrongs and putting art to work, but I’ll be honest, I’m just a little street art goblin slapping monsters on lampposts. I guess my message would be to have fun <3
Cosa ne pensi della street art in Italia e all’estero?
Ho visto cose incredibili. È fantastico vedere tutti i diversi stili e approcci che puoi dire provengono chiaramente da qualcuno che vive una vita completamente diversa dalla tua. Fa davvero sentire l’arte come una sorta di linguaggio internazionale.
What do you think of street art in Italy and abroad?
I’ve seen some amazing stuff. It’s awesome to see all the different styles and approaches that you can tell have clearly come from someone living a completely different life to yours. It really makes art feel like some kind of international language.
Tra tutti i tuoi lavori, qual è quello che ti piace e che ti rappresenta di più? e perché?
È difficile. Mi sento come se avessi uno stile coerente e mi piacerebbe pensare che le persone possano riconoscere il mio lavoro, ma farei fatica a scegliere un singolo pezzo poiché tendo ad essere irregolare quando si tratta di ciò che voglio disegnare. Se dovessi sceglierne uno, probabilmente sarebbe il mio Slasher Bear. Direi che non è nemmeno il mio lavoro migliore, ma sento che colpisce quel mix di horror e cartoni animati a cui tendo.
Among all your works, which is the one you like and represents you the most? and why?
That’s a tough one. I do feel like I have a consistent style and I’d like to think people could recognise my work, but I’d struggle to pick a single piece as I tend to be erratic when it comes to what I want to draw. If I had to pick one though, it would probably be my Slasher Bear. I would argue that it’s not even my best work, but I feel like it hits that mix of horror and cartoon that I strive for.
Quanto tempo ci vuole per preparare un’opera, dall’idea alla parete?
Dipende davvero dal pezzo. Non tanto a causa della complessità o del livello di dettaglio, ma di quanto tempo mi ci vuole per arrivare a una fase in cui mi piaccia. Sono molto esigente nelle prime fasi e spesso elimino e ridisegno completamente un design più volte. Dopodiché, dipende davvero dal tempo necessario per la stampa. Per gli incollaggi faccio non appena posso accedere a una stampante quando nessuno sta cercando e per gli adesivi, ottengo la maggior parte dei miei disegni stampati da Sticky_Friendz e sono bravissimi a far stampare il lavoro e inviarlo rapidamente.
How long does it take you to prepare a work, from the idea to the wall?
It’ll really depend on the piece. Not so much because of the complexity or level of detail, but how long it takes me to get it to a stage where it feels right. I’m very picky in the early stages and I’ll often completely delete and redraw a design multiple times. Then after that, it’s really dependent on the time it takes to print. For paste-ups it’s as soon as I can access a printer when nobody’s looking and for stickers, I get most of my designs printed by Sticky_Friendz and they’re great at getting the work printed and sent quickly.
Come ti vedi artisticamente parlando tra dieci anni?
Spero di avere molte più collaborazioni al mio attivo e un migliore livello di abilità. Mi piacerebbe anche poter produrre / stampare il mio lavoro, per aiutarmi ad essere più spontaneo e attivo.
How do you see yourself artistically speaking in ten years?
Hopefully with way more collaborations under my belt and a better level of skill. I’d also love to be able to produce/print my own work, to help me be more spontaneous and active.
CircusAlley, hai collaborato con altri artisti stranieri o vorresti? Chi sarebbe e perché ammiri particolarmente questo artista?
Ho lavorato con alcuni, è sempre fantastico farlo ed è così facile ora con una comunità online così vasta per l’arte digitale. La mia prima collaborazione internazionale è stata con trp613 sul mio pezzo da marinaio di Cthulhu. Mi piacerebbe davvero lavorare con chiunque, sono davvero entusiasta delle collaborazioni.
CircusAlley, have you collaborated with other foreign artists or would you like? Who would it be and why do you particularly admire this artist?
I’ve worked with a few, it’s always great to do so and it’s so easy now with such a huge online community for digital art. My 1st international collaboration was with trp613 on my Cthulhu sailor piece. I’d love to work with anyone really, I get a real kick out of collaborations.
Mentori: c’è un artista da cui prendi ispirazione? Se è così, chi è? Come ti ha aiutato?
Ce ne sono alcuni che mi vengono in mente, ma se dovessi sceglierne 2 che ritengo offrano una buona idea di ciò che mi ispira, dovrei scegliere The Spicy Donut e Omega Black. Amo sia i loro stili che i loro corpi di lavoro. Mi sento come se Spicy Donut colpisse quella miscela perfetta di “rubberhose” degli anni ’30 e divertimento di Halloween mentre Omega Black è solo puro horror impenitente. Adoro la loro serie “Slashtober”, prendo molta ispirazione dalle loro cover VHS dei loro finti film slasher.
