Apparan, raccontaci un po’ di te (nome, età, città di nascita e città in cui sei più attivo artisticamente parlando, ecc.)
Sono una street artist londinese originaria delle Isole Canarie. Unisco la mia carriera di insegnante a quella artistica, oltre a gestire un collettivo artistico e musicale chiamato Art House Project London, dove ho curato dozzine di mostre d’arte a Londra. Puoi vedere i miei murales in diverse località nell’East London che trasmettono messaggi di amore e unità alla comunità. Art House Project London è una piattaforma di artisti che mira a trovare spazi espositivi a prezzi accessibili per mostrare artisti e DJ urbani emergenti.
Apparan, tell us a little about yourself (Name, age, city of birth and city where you are most active artistically speaking, etc.)
I am a London based street artist originally from the Canary Islands. I combine my teaching career with my artistic one, as well as, running an art and music collective called Art House Project London where I have curated dozens of art shows in London. You can see my murals in different location in East London transmitting messages of love and unity to the community. Art House Project London is a platform of artists aiming to find affordable exhibition spaces to showcase upcoming urban artists and DJs.
Quando e come hai iniziato a creare le tue opere d’arte? Da dove viene la tua passione?
Sono sempre stata un appassionata d’arte. Disegno e dipingo da quando ricordo. È stato quando sono arrivata a Londra per la prima volta 15 anni fa, che mi sono innamorata completamente della street art. Sono diventato un grande fan di Banksy e mi piaceva vedere i colorati pasteups a Brick Lane. Essendo un fan e scattando foto di arte per le strade, immagino che fosse una questione di tempo che ho deciso di dipingere il mio primo stencil. Quando ho preso parte a Femme Fierce e ho incontrato così tante ragazze di street art, era chiaro che questo era quello che volevo fare.
When and how did you start creating your works of art? Where does your passion come from?
I have always been an art fan. I have been drawing and painting since I remember. It was when I first came to London 15 years ago, that I fell in love with street art completely. I became a big fan of Banksy and loved seeing the colourful pasteups in Brick Lane. From being a fan and taking photos of the art in the streets, I guess it was a matter of time that I decided to paint my first stencil in the streets. When I took part in Femme Fierce and I met so many female street art fellows, it was clear that this was what I wanted to do.
Quando prepari un nuovo lavoro, segui uno schema creativo ricorrente o è molto influenzato dal momento?
Sì, è influenzato dal momento e anche dai motivi ricorrenti che mi piace dipingere. Uso una serie di motivi nei miei murales e incolla come l’anatomia. Mi piace usare parti del corpo come organi, mani, occhi o labbra. Li uso cercando di dare loro una sorta di svolta surrealista come dipingere un cuore anatomico in un bicchiere da cocktail. Ho lavorato latamente con gli oli e mi sto divertendo a dipingere ritratti di donne con diverse espressioni facciali.
When you prepare a new work, do you follow a recurring creative pattern or is it very influenced by the moment?
Yes, it it influenced by the moment and also the recurrent motives I like painting. I use a series of motives in my murals and paste ups like anatomy. I like using parts of the body like organs, hands, eyes or lips. I use them trying to give them a sort of surealist twist like painting an anatomical heart in a cocktail glass. I have been working with oils latelly and am enjoying painting portraits of women with different facial expressions. Looking forwards to see where this will take me.
Che tecnica usi? L’hai sempre usato o è cambiato nel tempo? In caso affermativo, perché?
Ho iniziato a dipingere per strada usando gli stencil ma alla fine, quando ho iniziato a ottenere più controllo con la vernice spray, ho iniziato a dedicarmi maggiormente alla pittura con bombolette spray a mano libera. Uso ancora gli stencil per lavori di piccole dimensioni perché lo adoro. Ma non è molto pratico per le grandi pareti. Faccio anche incollaggi basati sulle mie illustrazioni. E durante il blocco dovuto alla pandemia, ho iniziato a lavorare di più in digitale.
What technique do you use? Did you always use that or did it change over time? If so, why?
I started painting in the streets using stencils but eventully, when I started to gain more can control, I started to move more into free hand spray can painting. I still use stencils for smaller size work because I love it. But it’s not very practical for big walls. I also do pasteups based on my illustrations. And during the lockdown, I have started to work digitally more.
Cosa vuoi trasmettere con i tuoi lavori?
Dipingo ogni volta per motivi diversi. A volte mi occupo di questioni sociopolitiche come l’ambiente o l’uguaglianza di genere. Cerco di trasmettere messaggi nel mio lavoro di unità e sorellanza con un’atmosfera surreale nella composizione.
What do you want to convey with your works?
I paint different motives every time. I sometimes deal with sociopolitical isssues like environment or gender equality. I try to convey messages in my work of unity and sisterhood with a surreal feel in the composition.
Cosa ne pensi della street art in Italia e all’estero?
Adoro vedere l’emergere degli sticker in Italia !! È davvero qualcosa di bello! Specialmente a Napoli dove il mio amico @whaifier sta conducendo una fantastica iniziativa al Giardino Liberato Di Materdei. Anche in Germania con il collettivo No Hate Family che si è diffuso in tutto il mondo. Una splendida iniziativa per riunire artisti con l’obiettivo di condividere la loro arte contro l’odio.
Direi che il lavoro di collaborazione tra collettivi come questi con @arthouseprojectlondon qui sono le cose che mi fanno andare avanti davvero.
What do you think of street art in Italy and abroad?
I love seing the emergence of pasteups in Italy!! It is really something! specially in Naples where my friend @whaifier is leading a fantastic initiative at the Giardino Liberato Di Materdei. In Germany as well with the No Hate Family collective which has extended all around the world. A wonderful initiative to get artist together with the objective of sharing their art against hatred. I would say that collaborative work between collectives like these with @arthouseprojectlondon here are the things that really keep me going.
Tra tutti i tuoi lavori, qual è quello che ti piace e che ti rappresenta di più? e perché?
Direi che il fatto che dipinga le donne e i colori che uso sulla pelle e sui capelli ricci sono molto distintivi. Cerco di trasmettere messaggi nel mio lavoro di unità e sorellanza con un’atmosfera surreale nella composizione.
Among all your works, which is the one you like and represents you the most? and why?
I would say that the fact I paint women and the colours I use in the skin and curly hair are very distinctive. I try to convey messages in my work of unity and sisterhood with a surreal feel in the composition.
Quanto tempo ci vuole per preparare un’opera, dall’idea alla parete?
Normalmente inizio con uno schizzo. Schizzo tutto il tempo. È una buona pratica perché mantiene la tua testa creativa sempre al lavoro e le idee in arrivo. E un muro di dimensioni medie può richiedere da cinque a otto ore a seconda della sua complessità.
How long does it take you to prepare a work, from the idea to the wall?
I normally start with a sketch. I sketch all the time. It is a good practice because it keeps your creative head always working and ideas coming. And an average size wall can take me between five to eight hours long depending on it’s complexity.
Come ti vedi artisticamente parlando tra dieci anni?
Uff! difficile da dire…spero di riuscire a vivere della mia arte e gestire progetti artistici per organizzazioni e comunità.
How do you see yourself artistically speaking in ten years?
Uff! hard to tell…hopefully living from my art and running art projects for organizations and communities.
Apparan, hai collaborato con altri artisti stranieri o vorresti? Chi sarebbe e perché ammiri particolarmente questo artista?
Sono stata molto fortunata ad aver dipinto con incredibili artisti di strada come @malimowcka @intikvna e @the_inca_kid mantenendo viva la street art latina a Londra. Inoltre, mi è piaciuto molto dipingere con @topi19 un muro tributo alle vittime della Grenfell Tower. È stato davvero stimolante collaborare con @jellyjatist in un muro che mostrava amore alla nostra comunità Stoke Newington. Una donna così potente!
Ho anche fatto alcune collaborazioni incollabili con @tweet_streetart dall’Australia. Sono adorabili illustrazioni su mappe in cui alcune delle mie motivazioni volano in giro per il mondo dai suoi palloncini che simboleggiano l’amore e l’unità in tempi di distanza sociale.
Apparan, have you collaborated with other foreign artists or would you like? Who would it be and why do you particularly admire this artist?
I have been very lucky to have painted with amazing street artists like @malimowcka @intikvna and @the_inca_kid keeping the Latin street art alive in London. Also, I loved painting with @topi19 a tribute wall to Grenfell Tower’s victims. It was really inspiring to collaborate with @jellyjatist in a wall showing love to our community Stoke Newington. Such a powerful woman! I have also done some pasteup collaborations with @tweet_streetart from Australia. They are lovely illustrations on maps where I got some of my motives flying around the world by her balloons symbolising love and unity in social distance times.
Mentori: c’è un artista da cui prendi ispirazione? Se è così, chi è? Come ti ha aiutato?
Sono molto fortunata ad essere circondata da così tanti artisti professionisti e stimolanti nel nostro collettivo Art House Project London. Penso che tutti quelli che ho incontrato lungo la strada mi abbiano ispirato o aiutato in un modo o nell’altro. Vorrei ringraziare @orbitldn, @carleendesozeer e @lespleen per i loro consigli e l’energia positiva.
