Ami, raccontaci un po’ di te (nome, età, città di nascita e città in cui sei più attivo artisticamente, ecc.)

Sono Claire aka Ami imaginaire (French per il mio amico immaginario), una streetartist francese. Sono nata negli anni ’70 in un piccolo villaggio di campagna e ora vivo a Parigi con la mia dolce metà e il nostro gatto Boo. Incollo principalmente la mia arte a Parigi, ma mi piace portarla con me ovunque io vada.

Ami, tell us a little about yourself (Name, age, city of birth and city where you are most active artistically speaking, etc.)

I am Claire aka Ami imaginaire (French for imaginary friend), a female street artist from France. I was born in the 70s in a small village in the country side and  now I live in Paris with my significant other and our cat Boo. I mostly paste my art in Paris but I like to take it with me anywhere I travel too.

Quando e come hai iniziato a creare le tue opere d’arte? Da dove viene la tua passione?

Ho iniziato a incollare gatti per strada nel 2012 a Parigi. Fin da piccola sono sempre stata una persona creativa, disegnavo e pitturavo. Non c’è nient’altro che mi piace di più! Sono un’autodidatta, il che significa che non ho mai studiato arte, ma ne sono sempre stato attratta. La mia prima carriera è stata nei film d’animazione in stop motion.

When and how did you start creating your works of art? Where does your passion come from?

I started pasting cats in the street in 2012 in Paris. I have always been a creative person, drawing and painting since I am a child. There’s nothing else I like more! I am an autodidact, meaning I never studied art, but was always drawn to it. My first career was in stop motion animation movies.

Quando prepari un nuovo lavoro, segui uno schema creativo ricorrente o è fortemente influenzato dal momento? Raccontaci come sono nate le tue opere.

Tutti e due. Le mie opere esprimono sempre l’emozione che provo in quel momento, ma il processo di creazione effettivo è spesso lo stesso. In genere mi piace pianificare in anticipo come dovrebbe essere un pezzo e raramente faccio improvvisazioni.

When you prepare a new work, do you follow a recurring creative pattern or is it very influenced by the moment? Tell us how your works are born.

Both. My works always express the emotion I am feeling at the moment, but the actual process of creation is often the same. I generally like to plan ahead what a piece should look like and I rarely do improvisation.

Che tecnica usi? Lo hai sempre usato o è cambiato nel tempo? Se sì, perché?

Al giorno d’oggi la mia tecnica è un mix di stencil, vernice spray e pittura a mano con acrilici. All’inizio stavo facendo tutto a mano ma richiedeva molto tempo, quindi ho imparato alcune tecniche di stencil per essere in grado di andare più veloce, specialmente con sfondi e contorni. Mi piacciono gli sticker perché permettono di avere una finitura molto pulita e di ripetere più volte la stessa sagoma.

What technique do you use? Did you always use that or did it change over time? If so, why?

Nowadays my technique is a mix of stencils, spraypaint, and hand painting with acrylics. At the beginning I was doing everything by hand but it was very time consuming so I learned a few stencil techniques to be able to go faster, especially with backgrounds and outlines. I like stencils because they allow to have a very clean finish and repeat a same shame several times.

Cosa vuoi trasmettere con i tuoi lavori?

Positività e speranza! Realizzo animali colorati per rallegrare la giornata delle persone. Nel mondo in cui viviamo, specialmente nelle città, la vita può essere piuttosto solitaria e insipida. Cerco di mettere un po’ di gioia affinché le persone si trovino sulla loro strada. Ricordare loro libertà, amore, felicità, anche per un minuto, mi sembra molto importante. Spero, con la mia arte, di portare uno scorcio di spensieratezza e leggerezza nel tumulto del nostro tempo

What do you want to convey with your works?

Positivity and hope! I make colorful animals to cheer up people’s day. In the world we’re living, especially in the cities, life can be quite lonely and bland. I try to put a little joy for people to be found on their way. Reminding them of freedom, love, happiness, even for a minute, seems very important to me. I hope, with my art, bringing a glimpse of insouciance and lightness in the turmoil of our time.

Ami, cosa ne pensi della street art in Italia e all’estero?

Ho avuto la fortuna di scoprire un po’ di street art italiana quando ho viaggiato in Sicilia alcuni anni fa. La vibrazione artistica nelle strade di Palermo è incredibile, sembra molto autentica e ha così tante forme diverse! Scoprire l’arte di strada all’estero è sempre una grande esperienza, così stimolante.

Ami,what do you think of street art in Italy and abroad?

I was lucky to discover a bit of Italian streetart when I traveled in Sicily a few years ago. The artistic vibration in the streets of Palermo is incredible, it looks very authentic and has so many different shapes! Discovering streetart abroad is always a great experience, so inspiring.

Tra tutte le tue opere, qual’è quella che ti rappresenta di più? e perchè?

Il gatto è quello che mi rappresenta di più, immagino. Mi piace che sia spensierato e amichevole e non possa mai essere domato.

Among all your works, which is the one you like and represents you the most? and why?

The cat is the one that represents me the most, I guess. I like that he’s carefree and friendly, and can never be tamed.

Quanto tempo occorre per preparare un’opera, dall’idea alla parete?

Dipende dal lavoro, dipende dal muro! Per gli incollaggi, lavoro nel mio studio. A seconda delle dimensioni e del modello, mi ci vogliono da alcune ore a diversi giorni per finire un pezzo. Per i murales, c’è un tempo di preparazione in cui creo un modello su Photoshop e poi preparo gli stencil, che possono richiedere giorni, prima di andare a dipingere il muro, il che può richiedere anche giorni!

How long does it take you to prepare a work, from the idea to the wall?

Depends on the work, depends on the wall! For paste ups, I work in my studio. Depending on the size and pattern it takes me a few hours to several days to finish a piece. For murals, there’s a prep time where I make a mock up on photoshop then prepare the stencils, which can take days, before I go and paint the wall, which can take days too! 

Come ti vedi artisticamente tra dieci anni?

Spero che sia ancora felice di quello che sto facendo e mi diverto! Nessun altro piano!

How do you see yourself artistically speaking in ten years?

Hopefully still happy with what I am doing and enjoying it! No other plans!

Ami, hai collaborato con altri artisti stranieri o lo vorresti, chi sarebbe e perché ammiri particolarmente questo artista?

Sì, ed è stato un piacere ogni volta. Condividere esperienza e cultura, lavorare in team, è davvero emozionante! Mi piace molto.

Have you collaborated with other foreign artists or would you like? Who would it be and why do you particularly admire this artist?

I have, and it’s been a pleasure every time. Sharing experience and culture, working as a team, it’s really exciting! I like that a lot. 

Mentori: c’è un artista a cui ti ispiri? Se è così, chi è? Come ti ha aiutato?

Ce ne sono molti!! Da bambina amavo molto i lavori di Keith Haring, mi piaceva la semplicità e l’efficienza. Successivamente mi sono interessata anche alla pop art, poi all’arte di strada quando mi sono trasferita a Parigi quando ero adolescente. L’arte di Speedy Graffiti negli anni ’90 ha avuto un enorme impatto sulla mia ispirazione, è stato divertente, gioioso, luminoso e felice, mi ha fatto sorridere e questa è una delle sensazioni più preziose. Sono fortunata di essere amica di alcuni street artisti di Parigi e all’estero, condividere i punti di vista con loro alimenta molto la mia ispirazione, il loro lavoro e la loro dedizione alimentano la mia ispirazione ogni giorno!

Mentors: is there an artist from whom you take inspiration? If so, who is it? How did it help you?

There are many!! When I was a child I was very fond of Keith Haring works, I liked the simplicity of it and it’s efficiency. Later I got interested in pop art too, then streetart when I moved to Paris when I was a teenager. The art of Speedy Graffito in the 90s had a huge impact on my inspiration, it was fun, joyful, bright and happy, it made me smile and that’s one of the most precious feeling.  I am lucky to be friends with a few street artists from Paris and abroad, sharing point of views with them is feeding my inspiration a lot, their work and dedication fuel my inspiration every day!
